Workplace & Office
KBR’s new workplace at 180 Lonsdale Street has been thoughtfully designed to foster collaboration, employee wellbeing, and connection across two expansive floors. The design reflects KBR’s vision and values, creating an inclusive and harmonious environment that evokes a strong sense of community and engagement. Inspired by the essence and cultural significance of Melbourne, the aesthetic, finishes, and overall experience of the 2700sqm space have been crafted to embody the city’s history and vibrant spirit.
The Challenge
A significant challenge in designing KBR’s new workplace was creating a layout that prioritised connection across the two floorplates, ensured line of sight for all employees, and provided equal access to expansive city views. Additionally, the design needed to seamlessly adapt to accommodate events and functions with external guests, without disrupting the everyday workflow, all within a compressed timeframe that required seamless coordination and efficient execution to meet an earlier-than-expected handover date.
The Solution
The key solution to these challenges was strategically stacking communal and breakout spaces across two floors, enabling fluid transitions while fostering a connected and cohesive workspace without the typical barriers of separate floorplates. Central to this vision is the hub on Level 18, which serves as the heart of the office, linking various work zones and cultivating a strong sense of community.
Designed to support everything from team meetings to social events, the central hub offers a range of functionalities without interrupting daily operations. Within the workspace, flexible areas accommodate focused work and informal interactions, while workstations are positioned to maximise natural light and city views.
Executed with Merit’s meticulous standards, the project was completed on time, meeting an early handover date. The design draws inspiration from both Melbourne’s vibrancy and Wurundjeri traditions, the design is rich with local references. Bespoke joinery flows like the Birrarung River, while boardroom lighting reflects the city’s rhythmic grid. At the heart of the breakout space is a Melbourne-inspired coffee bar that fosters connection and collaboration.
Set against a backdrop of bold contrasts that reflect the land and its waterways, the aesthetic is balanced by an earthy canvas, seamlessly weaving through KBR’s signature blue hues. Natural and sustainable materials, deep blues, blacks, and sandy tones honour the traditions of the land. While the splashback stone evokes misty mornings by the Yarra, and feature booth lighting resemble traditional woven fish baskets.
The Conclusion
The outcome of KBR’s innovative workplace at 180 Lonsdale Street is a dynamic, inclusive environment that seamlessly blends culture, collaboration, and wellbeing. Through thoughtful design, the space fosters a strong sense of connection across two expansive floors, enhanced by natural light, expansive city views, and flexible workspaces. Central communal hubs encourage interaction and engagement, while sustainable materials and energy-efficient lighting reflect KBR’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Inspired by Melbourne’s vibrant spirit and the cultural heritage of Wurundjeri land, the design integrates local elements, such as bespoke joinery reflecting the Yarra River’s flow and feature lighting capturing the rhythm of the city’s iconic grid. The result is a workplace that not only embodies KBR’s values but also celebrates the rich history and essence of its location.
